Building Dens! Here is a quick peek at the construction process of our handcrafted dog dens, made by my husband Larz. Larz prides himself on his ability to create spacious, secure, and high quality outdoor dog houses for our Malamutes.
Each den is made with high quality, sturdy, all wood construction. They feature 1×8″ cedar channel siding enforced by interior 2×4 and 2×6 constructed frames. The flooring is created with a FIR CDX 4x8x23/32″ plywood floor. No “pressure treated” or “chemically treated” wood is ever used in the construction of any part of the dens that dogs or puppies come in direct contact with. The entire den is constructed on top of treated 4×4 wooden skids. This allows for easy moving, cleaning, maintenance and repair.
The overall dimensions of the dens are 4x4ft square, and at it’s highest point, 48″, lowest 32″ due to the sloping roof, which allows easy weather drainage and provides additional space for air circulation.
The roof opens for easy access to clean, and to view pups if necessary. It fully locks. Metal flashing is used to deter chewing in specific areas that would otherwise be “tempting”. Additional photos will be added shortly showing final “product”.
The entire exterior of the dens are treated with Thompson’s Water Seal. Barn mats can be used to cover flooring for easier cleanup, and cedar shavings and/or straw can be used for bedding.
These dens can either be used as stand alone structures, and/or attached to the outside of kennels providing additional secured space.
We will be adding additional pictures here shortly, as well as pictures of our entire setup!
